Banarasi Silk Saree Shopping

Owing to the festivities of the previous night (Maha Shivaratri), we spent the whole of the next morning in our dormitory, trying to get enough rest before stepping out for more sightseeing activities.  

Come evening, we embarked upon a shopping expedition that took us through the colourful gullies of Varanasi. We strolled through the market at a leisurely pace, taking in the sights of the busy streets bustling with pilgrims, tourists, and vendors. As we purchased beautiful bangles, colourful dupattas, delicious sweets, intricately carved copper and brass items, and everything else that took our fancy, we noticed the long queue that led to the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Some people whispered that the queue could take as long as 8 hours to reach the temple premises for a glimpse of Kashi’s presiding deity, Vishwanath. 

In the Streets of Banaras

Our search for authentic Banarasi sarees led us to a small shop near Kashi’s famous Kaal Bhairav temple, where we spent the entire evening admiring and purchasing intricately woven Banarasi sarees. To our delight, even the men in our group were equally enthusiastic about shopping for their near and dear ones. That’s how we ended up buying most of what we saw, and a few more!!!

A Few Tips to Identify Genuine Banarasi Sarees:

1.  Check for the Geographical Indication (GI) tag: This indicates that the saree is made in Varanasi.
2. Closely examine the zari work: Pure Banarasi sarees carry intricate gold or silver zari work.
3. Feel the saree’s weight: Pure silk sarees are heavier than synthetic ones.
4. Examine the weave: Authentic Banarasi sarees are handwoven.
5. Consider the price: Authentic Banarasi sarees can be expensive, albeit a good investment that can be passed down to the next generation.
