Kashi Travel Guide: A Journey Through Varanasi, the City of Lord Shiva

Some places you plan to visit. Others, you’re called to. Kashi - also known as Banaras or Varanasi - is one such place.

Often described as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Kashi doesn’t feel ancient in a forgotten sense. It feels alive. It breathes. It listens. And if you slow down enough, it speaks directly to you.

This was only my second visit to Kashi, yet the pull was unmistakable. I didn’t plan this trip the way I usually do. I simply knew, somewhere deep within, that Kashi was calling me back.

There’s something about this sacred city that reaches deep into your soul - beyond temples, rituals, and history. Something older than memory itself.

Why Kashi (Varanasi) Is Considered the Oldest Living City in the World

Kashi is believed to have existed for over 3,000 years, making it one of the oldest living cities on Earth, and believe me, when in Kashi you can feel it.

But its age is not what defines it - its continuity does.

The city hums with devotion. The air carries the scent of agarbatti, the sound of temple bells, and stories passed down through generations. This is a city that belongs to Lord Shiva - not just symbolically, but spiritually. In Kashi, Shiva is not worshipped from afar. He is present. He is Kashi.

The Power of Kaal Bhairav Temple

Locals believe that no one enters Kashi without the permission of Kaal Bhairav, Shiva’s fierce guardian form. His temple, hidden within the city’s winding lanes, radiates an intense, grounding energy. It’s said he decides who comes - and who stays.

Standing there, it’s easy to believe that Kashi doesn’t just welcome you. It recognizes you.

Exploring the Ghats of Varanasi: Where Faith Meets the Ganga

The true soul of Varanasi lives along its ghats. Here are a few revered ghats:

Dashashwamedh Ghat and Assi Ghat: These are the most famous ghats in Varanasi, and for good reason. Both come alive at sunrise and again at sunset, which is why I made it a point to witness the Ganga Aarti twice - once in the quiet glow of morning and once under the golden evening sky.

Words fall short in describing that moment – Pandits stood in perfect synchrony, lifting huge flaming lamps as conch shells echoed and bells rang. Ma Ganga flowed silently beside them - calm, powerful, eternal. In that moment, I felt a profound connection with the universe.

As Indians, we grow up hearing stories of the Ganga. But here, she’s not a myth or a memory. She’s a living presence - symbolizing purity, forgiveness, and renewal. Every diya floating on her waters carries a prayer. Somehow, they all feel personal.

Manikarnika Ghat - Understanding Death in Varanasi: Among all the ghats in Varanasi, Manikarnika Ghat is the most intense one. Funeral pyres burn here 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are no pauses - not for rain, not for festivals. Here, death is not mourned, it is celebrated, as it is believed that those cremated at Manikarnika attain moksha, freedom from rebirth. Standing there, I didn’t experience fear. I felt peaceful. Because in Kashi, even death is divine. Watching the flames, hearing the mantras, and seeing life reduced to its simplest truth is humbling. Strangely, it brings peace. In Kashi, even death feels sacred.

Must-Visit Temples in Kashi (Varanasi)

Kashi Vishwanath Temple: The spiritual heart of the city, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, is one of the most important Shiva temples in India. The moment you enter, everything slows down. Thoughts fade. What remains is presence - just you and Mahadev.

Annapurna Devi Temple: Close by is Annapurna Devi Mandir, representing nourishment and abundance. The energy here feels gentle, grounding, and maternal.

Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple: A visit to Sankat Mochan feels deeply personal. Devotees come here to leave their worries behind, trusting that Lord Hanuman listens quietly - and faithfully.

What to Eat in Varanasi: A Food Lover’s Guide

Kashi nourishes more than just the soul. Here’s what you can savour while in Kashi:

Kachori Sabzi: A must-have breakfast in the bustling bylanes

Malaiyo (Nimish): A winter specialty so light it melts instantly - sweet, airy, unforgettable

Blue Lassi Shop: Famous for fruit-flavoured lassis served in kulhads, each with its own story

Baati Chokha: For authentic earthy flavours of Uttar Pradesh

Banarasi Paan: Not just a mouth freshener, but a cultural ritual

Shopping in Varanasi: What You Can Take Home

From Banarasi silk sarees that shimmer like woven poetry to rudraksha malas, brass idols, and spiritual souvenirs, Varanasi offers treasures at every turn.

But what you truly take home is intangible - the calm, the clarity, the sense of connection, and divine blessings - from the gods, from the city, from Ma Ganga herself. The city stays with you long after you leave.

Sarnath: A Peaceful Escape Near Varanasi

Just a short drive from the intensity of Kashi lies Sarnath, where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment.

The silence here is powerful. Where Kashi is about surrender, Sarnath is about awakening. Visiting both offers a rare balance - devotion and wisdom, intensity and stillness.

Final Thoughts: Why Kashi Calls You Back

This was only my second visit to Varanasi, but I know it won’t be my last.

Kashi doesn’t pull you back loudly. It draws you in gently - with memory, with familiarity, with the quiet assurance that some places know you better than you know yourself.

And for me, that place will always be Kashi.
